Biography

Lily Batchelder is the Robert C. Kopple Family Professor of Taxation at NYU School of Law and serves as an affiliated professor at the NYU Wagner School of Public Service, where she directs the Furman Public Policy Program. She co-founded and is the co-faculty director of the Tax Law Center at NYU Law. Her research primarily focuses on business tax reform, personal income taxes, retirement savings policy, social insurance, and wealth transfer taxes. Batchelder has published widely in leading journals and advises policymakers on tax policy, having testified before Congress on numerous occasions. In 2021, she was confirmed by the Senate as the Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, serving until 2024. Her tenure included leadership on significant legislative initiatives, such as the Inflation Reduction Act. Batchelder received her AB with honors from Stanford University, an MPP from Harvard Kennedy School, and a JD from Yale Law School.
