Biography

Lily Cheung is an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She focuses on engineering genetically encoded biosensors and quantitative fluorescence microscopy image analysis, as well as computational models of gene regulatory networks and transcriptional regulation in developmental biology. Over the past fifteen years, there have been remarkable advancements in genome sequencing and editing technologies, with costs decreasing by orders of magnitude. This has led to new systems-level approaches in biological research aimed at understanding the life and molecular interactions of organisms. Current technologies also facilitate site-specific modifications to genomes, allowing researchers to manipulate multicellular organisms in unprecedented ways. The Cheung lab aims to bring quantitative techniques and mathematical modeling to plant biology to gain a systems-level insight into physiology and development, particularly in understanding how metabolic and gene regulatory networks interact to control homeostasis and growth. The lab's goals include revolutionizing drug discovery and generating efficient, faster-growing crop varieties through the adoption of computational methods to analyze experimental data and develop predictive models.
