Biography

Lily Chi is an Associate Professor whose teaching encompasses topics in contemporary design research, as well as 18th and 21st-century theory and criticism in architecture. Her studios explore urban temporalities and the 1:1 situational aspects of film formation, while addressing questions of location and globalization within the contemporary city. Chi served as the design editor for the Journal of Architectural Education from 2000-2004. Currently, she is finalizing a writing project focusing on city-building in the context of war and propaganda, particularly in 20th-century Saigon. Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Architecture with high distinction from Carleton University in Canada, followed by a Master of Philosophy in architectural history and theory from Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. from McGill University. Her doctoral work examined the influence of Enlightenment concepts of custom, nature, and history on the formation of modern architectural discourse. Chi's research currently investigates the concept of 'sites' in architectural work, particularly in a geographically expansive discipline.
