Biography

Lina Girdvainyte is a Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Edinburgh, having joined in January 2023. She is a former Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Hamburg, where she focused on the intersections of history, citizenship, and civic belonging in the Greek world and Rome. Lina has also been involved in the ERC PATRIMONIVM project at the Ausonius Institute in Bordeaux. She completed her D.Phil. thesis at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford, specializing in the legal history of mainland Greece under Roman hegemony. Girdvainyte holds a Master's degree in Research in Classics & Ancient Civilisations from the University of Leiden and a Bachelor's degree in Classical Philology from the University of Vilnius. Her research interests include the civic diversity of the Greek world and Rome, exploring the transformation of civic belonging during the late Republican and early Imperial periods. She employs a range of epigraphic, literary, and legal sources to analyze how Roman imperial structures influenced Greek-speaking provinces and the reactions of subject populations. She is currently working on a project titled 'Beyond Citizen Alien: Civic Diversity in the Greek World and Rome,' aiming to reshape understandings of the nature of Greek city-states under Rome and address contemporary issues surrounding transnational migration and civic rights.
