Dr. Linda Åkeflo

Biography

Linda Åkeflo is an oncology specialist nurse holding a PhD in medical science. She conducts research at the Institute of Health and Care Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, at the University of Gothenburg, while being affiliated with the Centre for Sexology and Sexuality Studies at Malmö University. Her clinical work is focused on rehabilitation for women who have undergone radiotherapy for pelvic cancers at the Pelvic Cancer Rehabilitation Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Åkeflo's research examines vaginal sexual health and the quality of life for women treated with radiotherapy for gynecological, anal, and rectal cancers. Her doctoral thesis investigated the late effects of radiotherapy on female pelvic cancer survivors, emphasizing sexual health and well-being, and the impact of nurse-led interventions. She is involved in research projects that aim to prevent radiation-induced vaginal stenosis, preserving sexual health and quality of life. Linda has received a six-year research position from the Swedish Cancer Society, focusing on various collaborative projects and the experiences of women affected by sexual abuse and violence as they navigate their rehabilitation needs. She actively engages in research collaborations addressing cancer epidemiology and the impact of treatment on women's sexual health and support.
