Biography

Linda Cardinal is an emeritus professor in the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa, where she held the Chair of Research on Francophonie and Public Policies from 2004 to 2019. Her research primarily focuses on language rights politics, language policy, and the experiences of linguistic minorities in Canada and Europe. Known for her work on themes such as identity, citizenship, federalism, and political representation, Cardinal has established herself as an international expert in the rights of Canada's francophone minorities and Canadian politics. Over the years, she has published numerous articles and contributed significantly to political discourse. From 2001 to 2004, she directed the journal 'Politique et Sociétés' and served as chairholder of the Craig Dobbin Chair of Canadian Studies at University College Dublin from 2002 to 2004. Additionally, she was chairholder of the Canadian Studies Chair at Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris 3, from 2006 to 2007. Cardinal has held multiple leadership roles, including co-chairing the Language Politics Committee for the International Association of Political Science, and served on the board of executives for the International Political Science Association. In recognition of her contributions, she was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2013 and was nominated as a Chevalière of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Republic in 2014. In 2017, she received the Order of Canada for her contributions to the study of language policy, and in 2020, she was made Chevalière of the Ordre de la Pléiade.
