Biography

Professor Linda Steer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at Brock University, where she also serves as the Director of the PhD Program in Interdisciplinary Humanities. Her research primarily focuses on twentieth and twenty-first-century art and visual culture, examining the use and manipulation of photography within the contexts of the avant-garde movements, including the Surrealists and the Beat Generation. She is the author of 'Appropriated Photographs French Surrealist Periodicals, 1924-1939', published by Routledge Press in 2017. Steer's current research investigates drug photography from the 1970s to the present, particularly through the lens of its impact on empathy. She teaches a variety of art history courses, exploring topics such as the history of photography, appropriation, visual culture, and the intersections of censorship and controversy in the arts. Professor Steer also hosts a podcast course titled 'Introduction to the History of Western Art', which is accessible to the public and available on major podcast distributors, including her show 'Unboxing the Canon'. In addition to her teaching and research, she has contributed numerous articles to academic journals and has presented at various conferences.
