Biography

Lindy Orthia is an Honorary Senior Lecturer within the School of Sociology at the Australian National University (ANU), part of the Research School of Social Sciences in the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at La Trobe University and commenced her postgraduate studies at ANU, where she undertook honors in plant systematics at the Australian National Herbarium, CSIRO. Lindy pursued her Ph.D. in science communication, graduating in 2010. Acknowledging her historical approach to research, she also earned a Graduate Certificate in History. Prior to her academic career, Lindy was actively involved in various political issues and worked as a student representative in community organizations. Her notable awards include the 2020 Dean's Commendation for Excellence in Education Programs and recognition as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Lindy's research interests encompass the politics of knowledge, the rhetorical power of Western science compared to other knowledge systems, intersections of science communication with sociopolitical categories, and the representations of science in popular fiction.
