Biography

Lionel Tarassenko is a world-leading expert in the application of signal processing and machine learning in healthcare. He has a strong track record in the translation of clinical research into practical applications, significantly impacting the identification of patient deterioration in acute care and aiding self-management of long-term conditions through smartphone applications. Tarassenko pioneered the development of early warning systems for acutely ill patients and was involved in creating a machine learning system that gained FDA approval for critical care patient monitoring. He has been a professor in the Department of Engineering Science since April 1988 and was elected Chair of Electrical Engineering in 1997. Tarassenko's leadership has doubled the number of academic researchers at the IBME and earned the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2015.
