Dr. Lisa Bellini

Biography

Dr. Lisa Bellini obtained her medical degree from the University of Alabama in 1990. She came to the University of Pennsylvania to pursue her internal medicine residency training followed by a year as chief medical resident. After completing her pulmonary fellowship, she joined the faculty in 1996. Currently, she serves as vice chair of Education for Inpatient Services in the Department of Medicine and has been program director of the internal medicine residency for 20 years. She oversees both undergraduate and graduate medical education programs in the department. From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Bellini was the associate dean of Graduate Medical Education at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, where she had operational responsibility for policies and procedures related to the training of 1,000 residents and fellows across 68 UPHS-sponsored training programs. In 2008, she took on the role of vice dean for Faculty Affairs at the Perelman School of Medicine, where she oversees faculty policies and procedures. In 2016, her role expanded to senior vice dean for Academic Affairs, which includes oversight of Penn’s academic partnerships and strategic communications. Dr. Bellini is actively involved in national organizations such as the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine and has chaired various committees, impacting policies related to graduate medical education and faculty identity. Additionally, she has received numerous awards for her teaching excellence, including the Penn Pearls Teaching Award and the Lindback Award for excellence in teaching. Her research interests focus on medical education, resident well-being, and the effects of fatigue and sleep deprivation on patient outcomes and the learning environment.
