Biography

Lisa Binkley is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on Indigenous settler women's histories, material culture, and visual culture, with specific interests in textiles, needlework, and craft histories. Binkley has an educational background that includes a Bachelor of Arts in Human Geography (Queen's University), a Master's degree in Human Geography (Queen's University), and a PhD in Art History and Material Culture (Queen's University). She has also held a post-doctoral fellowship at Mount Allison University. Binkley's current research includes projects funded by the New Frontiers Research Fund, SSHRC, where she co-investigates Indigenous approaches to the Western literary and visual canon and creates vocabularies for rituals involved in climate grief. She has published multiple peer-reviewed book chapters and articles, including significant contributions to publications examining Indigenous craft and political contributions of women in art.
