Biography

Lisa Bourque Bearskin, a Cree Métis Registered Nurse, is an Associate Professor at the University of Victoria's School of Nursing and holds the Canadian Institute of Indigenous Health Research Indigenous Health Nursing Research Chair. With 30 years of experience in nursing, she is recognized for her expertise in Indigenous nursing leadership and Indigenous knowledge in nursing. Her research focuses on community knowledge generative processes that advance Indigenous health nursing. She is a strong advocate for advancing Indigenous health rights through a relational, rights and strength-based research approach. Additionally, she is the president of the Canadian Indigenous Nursing Association, leading changes to reconcile the paths of traditional Indigenous health care within community wellness frameworks. Having experienced the impacts of the residential school system and the sixties scoop era, she is committed to maintaining strong connections to her community and culture, and she has pursued her education in nursing extensively, completing her Baccalaureate, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing at the University of Alberta.
