Biography

Lisa Guntzviller is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests focus on interpersonal and health communication, particularly among underserved populations such as low-income and minority groups. Guntzviller's work examines the identity dilemmas that arise in interpersonal communication contexts. For example, her research investigates language brokering, where bilingual children translate and mediate for monolingual parents, as well as advice-giving in close relationships. These tasks often create inherent identity challenges, as they require the child to navigate roles that may conflict with their parent's authority. Guntzviller also explores parent-child relationships and health communication within Spanish-speaking families, as well as communication difficulties in patient-provider interactions. She utilizes dyadic data and applies a multiple goals framework in her research. Currently, she is involved in the ESSAMA research study, which examines the support and stress experienced by Latina mothers and their adolescents.
