Biography

Lisa Jenkins is an instructor of Ethnomusicology who teaches undergraduate world music. She holds a bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University, a master's degree in musicology from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Michigan. Her dissertation, titled "Celtic Connections: 'Celticism' in Scottish Music," examines the impact of local culture on Celtic music within a global aesthetic framework. Her work is informed by research conducted at the School of Scottish Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a focus on the annual Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow. Jenkins has taught courses in music history, world music, and folk music at various institutions, including the University of Michigan, Harrisburg Area Community College, and Penn State. She has also taught and conducted Javanese gamelan at Bucknell University. Furthermore, she has presented papers at conferences across the United States and Canada, as well as guest lectures at cultural events in Pennsylvania. Her performance experience in world music includes Highland bagpipes, bodhran, Javanese gamelan, and ko-tsuzumi taiko drumming. Her further research interests include Japanese music, globalization, and folk music revivals.
