Dr. Lisa Kerr

Biography

Lisa Kerr is an Associate Professor at Queen's Law, where she teaches courses on criminal law, evidence, sentencing, and prison law. She earned her BA from Simon Fraser University, her JD from the University of British Columbia, and her LLM and JSD from New York University, where she was named a Trudeau Scholar. Professor Kerr has clerked for the British Columbia Court of Appeal and served as an associate at Fasken Martineau, as well as a staff lawyer for Prisoners' Legal Services, Canada's dedicated legal aid office for prisoners. Her research focuses on law and policy regarding sentencing and prisons, and she regularly contributes to judicial education and opinion pieces in these areas. Her work has been cited in Supreme Court of Canada opinions, including significant cases like R v. Bissonnette and others. Alongside her teaching, she provides pro bono legal consultation on sentencing and prison law litigation matters, contributing to strategic litigation work at Queen's Prison Law Clinic. Additionally, she has been involved in initiatives to decriminalize sex work and has served on the board of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association.
