Biography

Lisa Kuitert is a Professor of Book Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Appointed in 2001, she specializes in the history of literary publishers and the book market from the 19th to 21st centuries. Kuitert earned her Master’s degree in Dutch Language Literature in 1988, focusing on the book trade during the World Wars, and completed her PhD in 1993 with a thesis on 19th-century literary publishing. As a post-doctoral researcher, Kuitert published studies on various aspects of Dutch literature and has been influential in establishing several academic programs, such as the Master’s programme in Book Manuscript Studies. She is also the editor-in-chief of 'Quaerendo', a journal published by Brill, and has served on the Board of Directors for the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing (SHARP). Her research is characterized by a blend of literary history and book history, analyzing the complex relationships between writers, publishers, and the commercial book market. Her innovative work includes studies on the private library of poet Lucebert and her recent focus on the history of the book market in the Dutch East Indies, which led to various published lectures and articles.
