Biography

Lisa Matthewson is a formal semanticist and fieldworker at the University of British Columbia's Language Sciences. Her research primarily focuses on discovering universal areas of languages in semantics and pragmatics, as well as the variations among languages in these areas. Since the early 1990s, Lisa has been working with St’át’imcets (Lillooet Salish), Gitksan (Tsimshianic) since 2010, and Niuean (Austronesian) since 2012. Lisa is also the co-director of the UBC Gitksan Research Lab. Her special research interests include modality, tense, aspect, quantification, determiners, discourse particles, presupposition, and methodology in semantic fieldwork. Additionally, she is committed to the preservation of endangered languages and has been involved in various language documentation initiatives, including the production of annotated text collections and curriculum development for language teaching.
