Biography

Lisa Richlen is a Canadian citizen and a sessional instructor at the University of British Columbia, holding a PhD from Ben Gurion University of the Negev, where she focused on community organizing among Sudanese Darfurian asylum seekers in Israel. She has substantial experience as an employee and consultant with multiple social change and human rights organizations between 2000 to 2021 in Israel. Richlen has taught various courses related to human rights, ethnicity, ethnic relations, non-violent social change, and social inequality across several institutions, including Simon Fraser University and Langara College. Moreover, she serves as Board Director at the ISSofBC and is currently a fellow at the S. Daniel Abraham Center for International and Regional Studies at Tel Aviv University. Her research interests include forced migration, refugees, ethnicity, diaspora, transnationalism, community organizing, and minority rights within African studies. Richlen explores the implications of migration for policy-making in both Israel and Canada, with emphasis on the experiences of specific immigrant groups.
