Biography

Lisa Voigt is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Yale University. She specializes in colonial Latin American literature and culture. Before joining Yale, she taught at the University of Chicago and The Ohio State University. Voigt is the author of significant works including 'Spectacular Wealth: Festivals in Colonial South American Mining Towns' (University of Texas Press, 2016) and 'Writing Captivity in the Early Modern Atlantic: Circulations of Knowledge and Authority in Iberian and English Imperial Worlds' (Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture/University of North Carolina Press, 2009), which won the Modern Language Association’s Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for outstanding book in the field of Latin American Spanish literature and cultures. Her research has garnered support from prestigious fellowships including NEH Fellowships at the Newberry Library and the John Carter Brown Library, a Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, and a Fulbright Gulbenkian Foundation Fellowship in Lisbon, Portugal. Voigt is currently working on a book project provisionally titled 'The Epistemology of Copy in Early Modern Travel Narratives,' which explores the recycling of illustrations of non-European worlds in European travel accounts. She has served as Interim Articles Co-Editor for Renaissance Quarterly and is the current Special Issues Editor for Colonial Latin American Review.
