Dr. Lisbeth Thygesen

Biography

Lisbeth Garbrecht Thygesen has worked in plant biomass science for 25 years, primarily in academia in Denmark and abroad. Her research focuses on understanding wood and plant materials, particularly how their chemical and structural characteristics influence their function and performance. She employs a range of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques to explore structure-function relationships in living trees and engages in traditional wood science research, including wood-water interactions and wood modification aimed at preventing the degradation of plant biomass during utilisation processes such as enzymatic saccharification. Additionally, she has worked extensively on plant cell wall-water-enzyme interactions and the microstructure of plant cell walls, especially cellulose. As of March 2019, she is the leader of the biomass science and technology research group at the University of Copenhagen, engaging in collaborations across top research areas internationally.
