Biography

Lisette ten Haaf is an Assistant Professor of Legal Theory at Utrecht University. She teaches and coordinates courses on Foundations of Law and Law and Human Biotechnology. Lisette supervises theses in the field of legal theory and biolaw. Her research primarily focuses on the legal position of unborn life, with her doctoral thesis addressing the conceptualization of the unconceived, or future child, within the law, particularly regarding the regulation of human biotechnology and reproduction. Her work critiques the current conceptualization of the future child as a legal subject, expressing particular interest in the implications of non-existence, and offers an alternative approach based on Hans Jonas's philosophy of responsibility. In recognition of her contributions, her doctoral thesis was awarded the Goudsmit Award by the Dutch Society for Health Law in 2025. Recent research activities explore the distinctions between the unconceived, future child, and conceived unborn child, as well as broader discussions regarding the legal recognition of unborn life. Lisette has published on a variety of topics, including compulsory contraception and mitochondrial replacement treatments, as well as prenatal child protection measures.
