Dr. Lisha Xu

Biography

Lisha Xu is a Lecturer in Translation Studies at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, University of Glasgow. She obtained her PhD in Translation from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 2021. Before joining the University of Glasgow, she worked as a Teaching Fellow in Chinese Translation Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her research primarily focuses on audio-visual translation, theatre literature, and translation advocacy, aiming to ensure a wider audience for theatre. Currently, her research is centered around translating Classical Chinese Opera (xiqu) for the Anglophone stage, which includes a study of Chinese translators during the early 20th-century diaspora. Lisha's doctoral research explored Peking Opera, one of the widely staged forms of Classical Chinese Opera in China, and how it was translated for the English-speaking audience. Her thesis analyzed the English-language production of Peking Opera on the London stage (1934) and the strategies employed by the Chinese translator, S.I. Hsiung, in negotiating formal narrative codes that bind Peking Opera to a characteristically unified and harmonious aesthetic. Her work recognizes the demands of spectatorship and the rights and interests of the original productions. She is currently working on a book about Classical Chinese Opera (xiqu) Translation.
