Livio Pellizzoni is a professor at Columbia University Medical Center with a dual appointment in the Departments of Pathology and Cell Biology as well as Neurology. He earned his BS and PhD degrees from the University of Rome La Sapienza and University of Rome Tor Vergata, respectively. Following his academic training at the University of Pennsylvania as an HHMI fellow, he began his independent career at the Institute of Cell Biology of Rome in 2002. He has been part of Columbia University since 2007 and has received several prestigious awards, including the EMBO Young Investigator Award and the Telethon Career Award. His research emphasizes the role of RNA binding proteins in regulating gene expression related to neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases. His laboratory investigates the mechanisms by which these proteins assist in forming RNA-protein complexes and how disturbances in RNA metabolism contribute to neuronal dysfunction and death. Current interests include studying the role of chaperone-mediated RNP assembly, identifying therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases like spinal muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and examining the effects of disease-linked mutations on neurodevelopment. Pellizzoni’s research employs diverse methodological approaches, including genomic, biochemical, and molecular imaging techniques, and aims to pinpoint genetic modifiers within disease pathways.
