Biography

Professor Liviu M. Mirica received a B.S. degree in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University in 2005. He worked as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2008. He started his independent career in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis and joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois in January 2019. His research focuses on synthetic inorganic organometallic chemistry and chemical biology, particularly the synthesis and characterization of novel transition metal complexes for multi-electron redox processes relevant to energy applications and oxidative organic transformations. His work also investigates the role of transition metal ions in the aggregation of amyloid β peptides related to Alzheimer's disease, developing metal-containing bifunctional compounds as potential therapeutic and diagnostic agents.
