Biography

Liwei Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he directs the Computational Physical Intelligence Laboratory (CPhI Lab). His research is focused on the development of computational design frameworks for advanced materials systems that enhance physical intelligence. His primary research interests include machine learning algorithms, mechanics models, multi-physics optimization methods, 3D/4D printing, smart structures, metamaterials, and multifunctional, programmable materials systems. The research group aims to explore applications that enhance human well-being and extend human capabilities, including mechanical protective cloaks, minimally invasive surgery, flexible electronics, soft robotics, and mechanical computing. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon University, Liwei was a postdoctoral scholar and visiting scholar at Northwestern University within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, from 2019 to 2024. He holds a B.S. with honors from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2017) and a Ph.D. with honors from the same institution (2022). He has received notable accolades including the institution-level Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award and various awards from the ASME Design Automation Conference.
