Biography

Liwei Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he directs the Computational Physical Intelligence Laboratory (CPhI Lab). His research focuses on developing computational design frameworks for advanced material systems, enhanced physical intelligence, and various applications that promote human well-being. His interests include machine learning algorithms, mechanics models, multi-physics optimization methods related to 3D/4D printing, and the development of smart structures, metamaterials, and programmable materials systems. The CPhI Lab aims to explore applications such as mechanical protective cloaks, minimally invasive surgery, flexible electronics, soft robotics, and mechanical computing. Liwei completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2022, where he received several honors, including the Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award. He has also held postdoctoral positions at Northwestern University and has been recognized at the ASME Design Automation Conference.
