Biography

Liz McCandless joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba in 2022 as a Senior Instructor and Director of Clinics. She is a member of the clinical practice team and has a rich background in legal practice, particularly in civil and public interest litigation focusing on human rights, constitutional, and Aboriginal law. From 2014 to 2021, Liz served as the Director of Legal Counsel at the Manitoba Law Reform Commission (MLRC). Prior to her time at MLRC, she contributed as Associate Counsel in the Commission of Inquiry Surrounding the Circumstances of the Death of Phoenix Sinclair. In addition to her role at the law faculty, Liz has taught various courses both at the Faculty of Law and the University of Winnipeg. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) obtained in 2007 and a Master of Laws (LL.M) attained in 2020, both from the University of Manitoba. Liz was called to the Manitoba Bar in 2008, and she received the Montague Israels Q.C. Prize for her academic accomplishments. Active in community service, she co-chairs the Manitoba Bar Association's Animal Law Section and serves on the Board of Directors for the Winnipeg Humane Society. Her involvement extends to conducting legal research for the Public Interest Law Centre on a pro bono basis and facilitating legal education programs.
