Biography

Liz Varga is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering at University College London, focusing on Complex Systems. She was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2024 for her services to critical infrastructure. Varga serves as a Commissioner for the National Preparedness Commission and leads the Infrastructure Systems Institute, where she investigates grand challenges related to resilience, sustainability, and the clean energy transition. Her research integrates transport, energy, water, sewage, and telecommunications systems to provide essential services for society and the economy. Prior to joining UCL, she held a professorship in Complex Infrastructure Systems at Cranfield University, where she led a team on computational modeling for interventions in infrastructure systems, specifically exploring the water, energy, and food nexuses. She received her PhD in 2009, which focused on the evolution of supply chains within the aerospace manufacturing industry, studying the emergent synergetic characteristics that led to significant industrial transitions.
