Biography

Lloyd Friedman, MD, is a pulmonary critical care specialist who primarily treats tuberculosis (TB), latent tuberculosis infection, and nontuberculous mycobacteria. He cares for critically ill patients in the intensive care unit at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Friedman was inspired to become a doctor in New York City in the late 1980s, during a dramatic increase in tuberculosis incidence, especially in areas affected by poverty. He has worked with a cohort of welfare patients in New York to assess the incidence of tuberculosis and AIDS-related deaths. The number of TB cases has declined dramatically, and Dr. Friedman finds it rewarding to support patients over the course of long-term treatment. He emphasizes the need for understanding and personal connection with patients, as TB treatment can span months to years.
