Dr. Lloyd Williams

Biography

Lloyd Williams is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Duke University, where he serves as the Director of Refractive Surgery and Director of Duke Global Ophthalmology. He is a distinguished cornea surgeon with expertise in a full spectrum of corneal transplant techniques, including DSAEK, DMEK, DALK, and penetrating keratoplasty. Dr. Williams specializes in advanced vision correction procedures like LASIK, PRK, ICL, and refractive lens exchange, aiming to help individuals live free from glasses and contact lenses. His expertise encompasses complex cases, including those involving prior surgical complications and ocular trauma. Furthermore, Dr. Williams has made significant contributions through humanitarian work, performing hundreds of cataract surgeries and corneal transplants in Africa, Central America, and Indonesia. He notably performed the first corneal transplant in Sierra Leone in 2021. As the Director of the Duke Global Ophthalmology Program, he is dedicated to expanding access to eye care and medical education worldwide. He has initiated programs to train physicians and reduce preventable blindness. In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Williams received the Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2025. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Materials Science Engineering and earned his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Tufts University, with residency training at the University of Utah and a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Johns Hopkins University.
