Biography

Dr. Lois McFarland is a lecturer in Religion and Literature at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on biblical re-visioning in contemporary speculative fiction, addressing how technology, societal changes, and the climate crisis challenge traditional interpretations. McFarland’s work highlights the intersection of feminist and womanist re-vision theories, queer theory, postcolonial theory, ecocriticism, and affect theory. She is the co-director of the New College Festival of Books and Belief and serves as the current director of the Scottish Network for Religion and Literature. McFarland has contributed significantly to academic literature, having authored monographs, co-authored books, and written peer-reviewed journal articles. Her notable works include 'Creation and Apocalypse: Feminist Speculative Fiction' and articles on the affective relationships in biblical texts, demonstrating her expertise in bridging literary study with theological inquiry. Her teaching encompasses undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Ethical Encounters and AI Theology, integrating diverse topics within Religion and Literature.
