Biography

Long Ju joined the MIT Physics Department as an assistant professor in January 2019. He focuses on understanding exotic quantum phenomena through the investigation of light-matter interactions, electron transport, and novel quantum materials. His research is particularly centered on atomically thin materials and van der Waals hetero-structures, which showcase a variety of intriguing electronic and optical properties. These materials provide exciting opportunities to explore the possibilities provided by controlling stacking order and electrically tuning band structure. Ju develops problem-oriented experiments using optical spectroscopy and microscopy tools across a broad spectrum from UV to THz, as well as DC transport measurements. His work employs ultrafast optical techniques and scanning probe optical microscopy to study dynamical properties at femtosecond time scales and nanometer spatial resolution. Additionally, he engages in device fabrication and the application of electric and magnetic fields to achieve external control of material properties.
