Biography

Originally from Wuhan, China, Longzhi Tan completed his S.B. in Physics with a minor in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012. He earned his Ph.D. in Systems Biology from Harvard University in 2018, where he developed high-precision methods for single-cell genomics. His research uncovered the 3D structure of the human genome at a single-cell level, revealing unique chromosome organization in various tissues, including the mouse eye and nose, and measuring the mutation spectrum in normal human brain neurons. After a postdoctoral fellowship in Karl Deisseroth’s lab at Stanford, Tan established his own lab in December 2022, focusing on the evolutionarily conserved 3D genome restructuring across species. His significant contributions to his field have garnered several awards including the PSF MIND Prize and HHMI FHS Finalist.
