Biography

Lonneke van der Velden is an Assistant Professor in Global Digital Cultures at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in Media Studies. Her research focuses on critical issues such as datafication, surveillance, digital inequalities, and the responses of social movements within civil society. Lonneke contributes to the AIsymmetries research project, which addresses the intersections of artificial intelligence and power asymmetries in the context of data justice. She has also been involved in the Data Publics Information Front, a seed-grant project of the Global Digital Cultures Research Priority Area, which analyzes Open Source Investigation cultures in relation to the context of Russia's war in Ukraine. From 2015 to 2021, she served as a postdoctoral researcher on the ERC-funded DATACTIVE project that examined the politics of data in civil society. Additionally, Lonneke has been a part of the editorial board for Krisis: Journal for Contemporary Philosophy from 2013 to 2023, engaging with technology, art, and civil society networks beyond the university. She has previously contributed to the Unlike network that theorized the development of alternatives and served as a board director for the Dutch Digital Rights organization, Bits of Freedom, from 2012 to 2020, where she held the chair position from 2016 to 2020.
