Biography

Lorenz Hegel joined the Singapore University of Technology and Design as a Lecturer in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences Cluster. He earned his Ph.D. in Film & Media Studies and German Studies from Yale University in 2024, where he focused on philosophy and literature. Prior to this position, Lorenz taught as a Visiting Lecturer at the Berlin University of the Arts in 2022 and was an Instructor for the Yale Summer Session in 2024. His research operates at the intersection of critical theory, aesthetics, and film media theory, with a particular interest in the form and history of political documentary cinema. Lorenz is currently working on a book project tentatively titled "Search Revolution: Transnational Militant Documentary Practice," which traces the history of transnational solidarity filmmaking from the late 1920s through the long sixties. His additional projects include an article on contemporary archival documentaries and a chapter on ideology critique for an upcoming edited volume titled "Aesthetics Althusser."
