Biography

Lori Blondeau is an Associate Professor in the School of Art at the University of Manitoba. As a Cree/Saulteaux/Métis artist, her work spans performance, photography installation, and curatorial activities. She co-founded and served as Executive Director for TRIBE, an Indigenous art collective aimed at enhancing Indigenous art knowledge production in Canada. Her notable performances include 'Mother?' (2000), 'Sisters' (2002), and 'States Grace' (2007). Blondeau’s photographic works, such as 'COSMOSQUAW' (1996) and 'Lonely Surfer Squaw' (1997), exhibit a remarkable clarity and humor. Her practice has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across prominent venues including Nuit Blanche in Saskatoon, VIVO in Vancouver, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. A pivotal moment in her career was her participation in the 2007 Venice Biennial. Furthermore, Blondeau has engaged in academic discussions, presenting at institutions like the University of Saskatchewan and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts. In recognition of her contributions to visual media arts, she received the 2021 Governor General’s Award.
