Biography

Lorie M. Harper, M.D., is a professor and the chief of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Women’s Health at Dell Medical School. She is a clinical provider at UT Health Austin Maternal-Fetal Medicine Clinic and a nationally recognized scientific researcher. Dr. Harper earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees, summa cum laude, in biology and chemistry from the University of Texas at Dallas before completing her medical degree at Washington University in St. Louis. She underwent residency training in obstetrics and gynecology followed by a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine. Additionally, she earned a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation. Her research focuses on clinical management of obesity in pregnancy, reducing the risk of surgical-site infections during cesarean sections in obese women, and complications associated with gestational and pregestational diabetes. Her research has also expanded to include management of substance use disorders during pregnancy, especially in the context of the ongoing opioid epidemic.
