Biography

Professor Lorna Gibson studies the mechanical behavior of materials, specializing in materials with cellular structures, and engineering honeycombs, foams, and scaffolds for regenerative engineering. Her research interests also include natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and plant leaves and stems. The Gibson Group has contributed to the understanding of the mechanics of cellular solids and their applications. She is a co-author of 'Cellular Solids: Structure and Properties' and 'Metal Foams: Design Guide', as well as having authored works on cellular materials in nature medicine. Her projects include the design and characterization of osteochondral scaffolds for cartilage regeneration, mechanics of fluid flow in open-cell foams for impact protection, and the development of low thermal conductivity aerogels for building applications, in addition to investigating the structural mechanics of bamboo and balsa-inspired engineering materials. Professor Gibson earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in civil engineering from the University of Toronto in 1978 and a PhD in materials engineering from the University of Cambridge in 1981, focusing on the elastic and plastic behavior of cellular materials. She previously worked as a senior engineer at Arctec Canada before entering academia as an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia from 1982 to 1984. She joined MIT in 1996 and has held several leadership roles including chair of faculty and associate provost.
