Biography

Lorne Whitehead received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of British Columbia and is a Professional Engineer. His career has involved sustained innovation in technology and business administration. He served as CEO of TIR Systems, a UBC spin-off company that eventually grew to over 200 employees before being acquired by Philips in 2007. A faculty member at UBC since 1994, he presently holds the position of Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. His research includes the study of the optical, electrical, and mechanical properties of micro-structured surfaces and he holds more than 140 patents, many with international counterparts. He has played a pivotal role in starting six additional companies and has held various administrative positions at UBC, including Associate Dean and Special Advisor to Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Research. Whitehead co-founded the Bay View Alliance in 2013 to collaborate on applying improvement science to educational leadership challenges and currently serves as the Immediate Past Director. His research primarily focuses on novel geometrical approaches within applied physics and has led to significant advancements in lighting technologies, including several patented inventions that have commercial applications.
