Lorraine Janzen Kooistra is a Professor Emerita and founding Director Emerita of Ryerson’s Centre for Digital Humanities (CDH). She served as Chair of the English department from 2005-2008 and was the Undergraduate Program Director from 2010-2013. Kooistra is a member of Yeates School of Graduate Studies and contributes to the English MA Literatures and Modernity interdisciplinary joint graduate program in Communication and Culture. She received both her MA and PhD in English from McMaster University, where she was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal for her dissertation on illustration in book arts during fin-de-siècle Britain. Her research interests include Victorian illustrated books and periodicals, critical remediation in digital editions, and the interaction between text and image in shaping cultural values. Kooistra has led various significant projects funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and has participated in numerous international digital humanities initiatives. Her innovative teaching has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Provost’s Experiential Teaching Award in 2012. She has published extensively, including works focused on Victorian visual culture and the effects of digital humanities on traditional literary studies.
