Dr. Lotte Segal

Biography

Dr. Lotte Segal is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh in the School of Social and Political Science. With a focus on ethnography and political violence, her research encompasses issues in occupied Palestine, trauma, and kinship. Dr. Segal’s early work involved field research among families of Palestinian political detainees, aiming to document the social stigma associated with their confinement. She has been involved in various large-scale projects, including the VELUX-funded HUM-PRAXIS initiative, focusing on the experiences of violence survivors and the ethical challenges faced by caregivers. Dr. Segal's academic contributions also extend to comparative studies of Scandinavian welfare states and their interactions with Middle Eastern survivors of violence. Her publications address themes of grief, kinship, and the lived experiences of individuals under occupation. Dr. Segal served on the editorial boards of numerous journals and has been active in developing academic networks that address violence and trauma, collaborating with NGOs and academic institutions internationally. She is currently leading courses on social anthropology and mental health, fostering an environment for interdisciplinary dialogue and ethical considerations in research practice.
