Biography

Louis Kaplan has taught at the University of Toronto since 2002 and currently serves as the Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies. He is recognized internationally for his innovative historical and theoretical contributions to the field of photography studies, particularly in areas such as spirit photography, community, photographic humour, and New Vision. His wide-ranging research interests encompass 20th and 21st-century European and North American art, visual culture, film and media culture, deconstruction, contemporary Jewish art, humour studies, and new media art practices, particularly augmented reality. Kaplan is the author of numerous books, exhibition catalogues, and articles in his fields of interest, and has contributed to collaborative digital art and media projects. His recent publications include works on the American spoken word artist and New Age mystic known as Xxenogenesis and the edited catalogue associated with the Jewish refugee photographers of the S.S. Winnipeg. He continues to pursue an interdisciplinary project on Jewish photographic humour and has received several grants and awards, including from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Kaplan has held various roles, including a visiting professorship at the University of Michigan and faculty fellow positions. He is a member of several professional organizations and editorial boards, contributing to the scholarly discourse in his fields of expertise.
