Biography

Louis Maheu is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Montreal and has had a distinguished career in sociology. He obtained his bachelor's (1964) and master's (1966) degrees in sociology from the University of Montreal and his doctorate (1973) from the École pratique des hautes études – University Paris-Sorbonne. His research focuses on the analysis of social movements and collective action, as well as the functioning of university systems, particularly at the graduate level. Maheu has been actively involved in various research missions both nationally and internationally, including France, Italy, Britain, and Argentina. He has published extensively, with over one hundred publications including seven books and numerous articles. He has taught various courses at all levels, most notably 'Introduction to Sociology' and has been recognized for his exceptional teaching and mentorship, especially at the graduate level. Throughout his career, he has held various administrative roles, including Director of the Department of Sociology, Vice-Dean, and Dean of Graduate Studies. He was appointed Vice-Rector for Graduate Studies and has contributed greatly to the development of graduate education at his institution. Also a member of the Royal Society of Canada, he has been awarded numerous accolades throughout his career, including serving as the President of the Association of Deans of Graduate Studies in Quebec.
