Biography

Louise Winteringham leads the Translational Cancer Research Program at the Perkins Institute. She has an extensive background in immunology and haematology with a focus on molecular and cellular biology in cancer, particularly haematological cancers. Louise completed her Master of Science in the Department of Clinical Immunology at Royal Perth Hospital, where she investigated the impact of non-coding regions in the Major Histocompatibility Complex. With years of experience from St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, she was awarded the Richard Walter Gibbon Fellowship by the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Western Australia to undertake her PhD. Upon returning to Perth, she joined the Leukemia Laboratory at the WA Institute for Medical Research, which was headed by Professor Peter Klinken. Louise's research has continued to focus on the biochemical and cellular mechanisms that drive oncogenesis, leading to the identification of novel genes associated with the development and progression of cancer. In 2017, she initiated the Translational Cancer Research Program at Perkins to develop collaborations with pathologists and surgeons for a co-ordinated approach to quickly move laboratory discoveries into cancer treatments.
