Biography

Loukas F. Kallivokas, born in Athens, Greece, completed his military service in the Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service before graduating from the National Technical University of Athens. He joined the Department of Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, earning an M.S. in Civil Engineering in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics in 1995. Following his Ph.D., Dr. Kallivokas held a joint postdoctoral appointment at the Medical Robotics Computer Assisted Surgery Laboratory and a biomechanics laboratory at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, focusing on simulations of orthopedic biomechanical problems. He was a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University from 1995 to 1997 and served as a visiting scientist at the School of Computer Science from 1998 to 1999. In 1999, he joined the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor, later becoming a professor and holder of the Brunswick-Abernathy Regents Professorship in Soil Dynamics and Geotechnical Engineering. His research interests include computational engineering sciences, particularly wave mechanics and inverse problems, and he works on applications in metamaterials design, subsurface imaging, and seismic motion wave propagation modeling. He has received notable awards such as the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2003 and the Allen Newell Medal for research excellence in large-scale modeling of seismic motion in 1998.
