Biography

Lowell Gasoi is an instructor in communication studies at Carleton University in Ottawa. A Vanier Canada Scholar in 2017, he holds BA and MA degrees in media communication studies from Concordia University in Montreal and earned his PhD from Carleton in 2021. His dissertation research examines the relationship between artists and elements of the Canadian cultural policy apparatus, reflecting on his more than 25 years of experience as a theatre-maker and arts administrator. Lowell teaches courses covering foundational theories of communication and media, research methods, discourse, and the creative cultural industries. His published research reaches both national and international audiences and explores themes such as intermedial theatre, memory, performance of political dissent, and cultural policy in the wake of the #MeToo movement. His broader research interests involve the presence of liveness in the art world, advocacy, and the intersection of performance with communication and media studies.
