Biography

Lowie Vanfleteren is a Senior Lecturer and Specialized Physician in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Gothenburg, where he also heads the COPD center at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. He obtained his medical degree in June 2005 and subsequently completed his internal medicine training at Atrium Medical Center in Heerlen, Netherlands. In August 2007, he began his residency in respiratory medicine at Maastricht University Medical Center, earning a chest physician degree in August 2011. Before moving to Gothenburg in 2018, he worked at CIRO+, a center of expertise for chronic organ failure in Horn, Netherlands. Throughout his career, he has focused on pulmonary rehabilitation and has initiated various clinical approaches for COPD treatment, including home mechanical ventilation collaborations and multidisciplinary treatment for severe asthma. Vanfleteren completed his PhD on COPD comorbidities at Maastricht University in February 2015. His research interests lie in COPD, where he has been a principal investigator for several studies and has had a strong international presence, including roles in the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society. He has published over 100 scientific articles and has received multiple awards for his contributions to respiratory medicine.
