Biography

Luc Theriault is a Professor at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), specializing in sociology with a focus on non-profit and charitable organizations, particularly co-operatives and their role in the liberal capitalist economy. He obtained his specialized Bachelor of Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in 1985 and completed his Master of Science at the Université de Montréal in 1987. His doctoral studies culminated in a Ph.D. in 1995 from the University of Toronto, where his dissertation addressed industrial research and development. Theriault has held various academic positions including as a sessional instructor and post-doctoral fellow, and has worked with the Saskatchewan Department of Social Services. Joining UNB in 2005, his courses cover research methods, sociology of science, Canadian society, sociological theory, and social policy. His current research interests include Canadian social economy, public social policies, and social assistance, with a keen interest in utilizing quantitative and qualitative mixed methods. Theriault has published extensively on these topics and has served as Chair of the Department of Economics at UNB from 2017 to 2024.
