Biography

Professor of Eurasian Studies and Subject Group Lead in Central & East European Studies, Luca Anceschi has been teaching since September 2013. His research agenda employs innovative Area Studies methodologies to study authoritarianism in Eurasia. Anceschi's forthcoming book, 'Pandemic Politics in Central Asia—Authoritarian Contagion,' showcases findings from intensive research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, interrogating the intersection of public health crises and authoritarian consolidation in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Throughout his career, he has predominantly focused on processes of foreign policymaking in Central Asia. His work has unveiled the domestic power implications of policy frameworks designed to operate at the international level. He has authored several monographs that delve into the foreign policy of Central Asia, including 'Turkmenistan’s Foreign Policy: Positive Neutrality and the Consolidation of the Turkmen Regime' (Routledge, 2008) and 'Analysing Kazakhstan's Foreign Policy: The Regime, Neo-Eurasianism, and the Nazarbaev Era.' His research findings have appeared in top Area Studies journals, such as the Journal of Contemporary Asia and Post-Soviet Affairs. Anceschi serves as editor of Europe-Asia Studies, a premier academic journal for the study of post-socialist countries in Europe and Asia. From 2024 to 2028, he will lead the Glasgow-based Shifting Global Polarities Network+, a major UKRI investment.
