Biography

Luca Busino is an Associate Professor in the Cancer Biology Department at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which the ubiquitin-proteasome system regulates cell proliferation and contributes to tumor initiation and maintenance. Misregulation of protein degradation pathways is commonly observed in cancer cells, making this research highly significant. The Busino Lab's research interests include signaling pathways related to cell division, DNA damage responses, and the circadian clock, as well as the identification of small molecules targeting ubiquitin ligases. The lab intends to develop high-throughput assays to identify specific ligase-substrate interactions. This could potentially lead to novel therapeutic targets for hematological malignancies, which account for a significant percentage of new cancer diagnoses in the United States. The long-term goal is to identify candidate molecules for further testing in models of leukemia and lymphoma.
